Dersin Amaç ve İçeriği

Course Objectives: The course aims to advance the theoretical and practical knowledge and creativity of students who have received basic training in producing digital photo images. It aims to develop the student's ability to generate ideas for a photographic project and to manage the whole process, including visualizing this idea, processing, displaying and / or publishing it.
Course Content: The course covers the solution of visual communication design problems with photography and the interpretation of the texts of the artists and the field. Students produce series of photographs in the context of different photography schools aimed at solving design problems.

1) Learn how to benefit from the history of art and photography for a photography project to be created.
2) They learn different artistic photography perspectives such as pictorial photography, surrealist photography, Duesseldorf photography school, new objectivity trend.

1) They learn by experiencing how an idea can be turned into a documentary photography project.
2) By expressing the photographic visual story in the most appropriate visual language, they create a meaningful documentary photography project.
3) They use digital image processing programs in the most appropriate and efficient way within the scope of the project they produce.

1) They gain experience in teamwork through research and study groups formed within the course.

1) They learn the history of documentary photography.
2) They learn by which different methods and techniques a subject can be handled in the process of creating visual language and meaning.

1) While producing their photography project, they learn to express themselves as an artist by getting involved in the society.

Week Subject Related Preparation
1) General lecture presentation. The process and presentation of the course. Explanation of the project subject to be produced by the students and evaluation of the teaching methods of the course.
2) Q&A around the “People and Places” project theme. Creating groups for students' project research. What is documentary photography? The transformation of documentary photography from Lewis Hine until today. How can an idea be developed as a documentary photography project? Discussion on how the project subject can be handled with the documentary photography method through examples from the history of photography.
3) Presentations of the groups. Discussions on how the project theme can be implemented as a contemporary documentary photography project. The important points of photographic visual storytelling will be emphasized. Students are expected to present examples of contemporary documentary series in the context of the project subject before coming to the class by meeting online with the group members.
4) What is pictorial photography. Alfred Stieglitz and his contemporary followers. Discussions on how to shoot the same subject in two different styles. Evaluation of students' first project shootings. Students are expected to take photographs in line with the project given before coming to the class and present the photographs in the class.

6) What is a surrealist photo? Surrealist photographers since Man Ray. How can the surrealist perspective be included in the project? Interpreting the images that students produce in line with the project. Students are expected to take photographs before coming to the class in line with the assignment.
