ECTS Credit Allocation

The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) is a student-centered credit system based on the student’s workload. It represents the total amount of work a student must complete to successfully pass a course, including theoretical lectures, practical work, seminars, individual study, examinations, and assignments. The key criterion in determining this value is learning outcomes. The time a student spends achieving these outcomes determines the ECTS value of a course. In other words, the fundamental measure in assigning ECTS credits is the student workload. Istanbul Topkapı University has been implementing the European Credit Transfer System, which is an essential component of the Bologna Process, since 2008. The calculation of ECTS credits was reviewed and updated through regulations approved by the University Senate. With the revisions made in 2012, the workload distribution of courses was reorganized in accordance with the competency levels and program learning outcomes defined by the ECTS Guide and the Turkish Qualifications Framework (TQF). The total number of credits required for all courses in an academic year is 60 ECTS, corresponding to 30 ECTS per semester.
