English Preparatory Class
Students who have been admitted to associate degree or undergraduate programs taught in a foreign language at the Vocational School or Faculties are required to take an English proficiency exam. Those who pass the exam or present an international language test score deemed sufficient by the Vocational School are directly enrolled in their respective academic programs.
Students who fail the exam are placed in a one-year English Preparatory Class. Those who succeed in the proficiency exam held at the end of the first semester, or who present an acceptable international language test score, are eligible to begin their academic program in the second semester. Students who fail at the end of the preparatory year must continue in the English Preparatory Class for a second year. The repeated preparatory year and the time spent in English preparation are counted toward the total duration of education.
Students admitted to Turkish-medium programs at the Vocational School or Faculties may choose to attend the one-year English Preparatory Class on a voluntary basis. If they wish, they may begin their program courses in the second semester. These students are required to pay the tuition fee for the English Preparatory Class. In accordance with the "Regulation on Foreign Language Education and Instruction in Higher Education Institutions" published in the Official Gazette dated 4 December 2008 and numbered 27074, the one-year period spent in the optional English Preparatory Class is not counted toward the duration of study. At the end of the year, students return to their respective programs. Students who complete the optional English Preparatory Class successfully are awarded an English Proficiency Certificate.
Program
The weekly curriculum of the English Preparatory Class is designed to equip students in English-medium programs with the language skills necessary to follow courses taught in English.
The curriculum is based on the four key language skills: writing, reading, listening/speaking, and grammar. Weekly course hours are distributed as follows:
Reading: 6 hours
Writing: 6 hours
Listening/Speaking: 6 hours
Grammar: 4 hours
Video lesson (supporting listening/speaking skills): 2 hours
This brings the total weekly instruction time to 24 hours. The program consists of 4 modules, each lasting 9 weeks (excluding exam weeks), resulting in a total of 32 instructional weeks. This period does not include the placement test, exemption exam, weekends, official holidays, midterm or final exam days.
To successfully complete the English Preparatory Program and begin departmental courses, students must score at least 60 out of 100 on the final exam.
