Course Objectives: | This class is designed to introduce international relations (IR) students to diplomacy. The course mainly deals with the origin and growth of diplomacy and the theories of diplomacy in order to better understand the world diplomatic history and system. It examines the changes that took place on the world diplomatic system and approaches to analyze them. It also deals with the organization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the formulation of foreign policy; the functions of the embassy; the qualities of a diplomat; and different accounts dealing with issues ranging from negotiation to immunities, and from international trade or law to etiquette and protocol |
Course Content: | The course is divided into two parts. The first part provides an introduction into diplomacy and the theory of international negotiations. The second part deals with the practice of diplomacy and negotiations. The course provides a discussion of global issues and current world problems, such as peace and security, climate change and international trade. It discusses cases of successful diplomacy and/or failed diplomacy |
