Dersin Amaç ve İçeriği

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to examine the relationship between image and culture and art. The course aims to provide the student with information about the change in visual culture and communication along with modernity.
Course Content: In the course, the basic concepts of visual culture will be introduced and the effects of mechanical reproduction in the context of visual culture and communication will be discussed. The changes that historical avant-garde movements have created on image production and visual culture will be examined.

1) General course presentation. Course, presentation and presentation.
2) What do the images tell us? Reading the image. Homework.
3) Visual communication, culture, and art relationship. Interpretation of homework.
4) Industrial revolution and the age of mechanical reproduction. Modernity and seeing relationship.
5) Introduction to the dadaism movement.
6) How is Dadaist poetry written? Dadaist photomontage construction. Homework.
7) Surrealism trend. Interpretation of homework.
8) Midterm.
9) What is the surrealist understanding of cinema and photography? Surrealist photo examples. Homework.
10) Futurism trend. Interpretation of homework.
11) Futurism movement and cinema. Fritz Lang's Metropolis movie will be watched and discussed. Homework.
12) Bauhaus school and design concept I. Interpretation of homework.
13) Bauhaus school and design concept II. Homework.
14) Visual culture and image production discussions in the context of the topics covered throughout the semester. Interpretation of homework.
15) Final exam.
