Exam Regulations & Assessment & Grading’

Examinations, assessment, and grading are conducted in accordance with the “Istanbul Topkapı University Associate and Undergraduate Education and Training Regulation.”

Achievement and evaluation in examinations are carried out pursuant to Article 24 of the aforementioned regulation.

ARTICLE 24

(1) Examinations consist of midterm exams, end-of-semester exams, make-up exams, excuse exams, and single-course exams. The principles regarding examinations are as follows:

  1. a) Midterm Exam: At least one midterm exam is administered for each course. The midterm requirement may be fulfilled through in-semester assessments such as projects, graduation papers, laboratory work, workshops, or similar studies. The results of the midterm exams are announced prior to the final examination period.
  2. b) End-of-Semester Exam: This exam is held at the end of the semester in which the course is completed. Students who have registered for the course and fulfilled the attendance requirement are eligible to take the end-of-semester exam.
  3. c) Exemption Exam: An exemption exam may be conducted for specific courses determined by the Senate at the beginning of each semester. The exemption exam is held on the date specified in the academic calendar for students who apply within the announced period. Students who pass the exam are exempted from the corresponding courses.

d)Excuse Examination: Students who are unable to attend midterm or end-of-semester examinations due to valid reasons, and whose excuses are accepted by the Faculty (Unit) Administrative Board, may exercise their right to take these examinations on the date and time determined by the same board. Make-up examinations for midterms are held prior to the commencement of end-of-semester examinations.

  1. e) Single-Course Examination: Students who have fulfilled all other graduation requirements but have failed only one course may take the single-course examination. The student’s success in that course is determined solely by the grade received in this examination. The financial conditions of the single-course examination are determined by the Board of Trustees.
  2. f) Additional Examination: Additional examination rights are granted, in accordance with the principles approved by the Senate, to the following groups of students: Final-year students who cannot graduate within the maximum period of study; Students who have successfully completed all required courses in their program but have been dismissed due to failing to achieve a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.00; Students (including those in preparatory classes) whose enrollment has been terminated for failing to meet in-term and end-of-term examination requirements despite fulfilling attendance obligations, in accordance with Article 44 of Law No. 2547; Intermediate-year students who have not met the GPA requirement.

(2) Examinations for courses with a common code or multiple sections are administered jointly. Letter grade intervals are determined by the mutual decision of the relevant instructors.

(3) A student’s achievement in each course is determined through the combined evaluation of in-term grades and the end-of-semester examination. In-term grades consist of scores obtained from midterm exams and/or assignments, practical applications, and similar studies.

(4) The types of in-term assessments, their contribution to the final course grade, and the weight of the end-of-semester examination are announced to students by the course instructor at the beginning of each semester and reported to the relevant department or program chair.

(5) The course instructor may, at their discretion, evaluate assignments, laboratory work, and similar activities as midterm examinations. When determining the final grade at the end of the semester, the instructor takes into account midterm and end-of-semester exam results, in-term studies, and class attendance. The instructor has the authority to determine the relative weighting of these components.
